Andrew W. Merced is the author of Jonathan the Elephant, along with several other books. In 1996, Andrew was diagnosed with autism after being assessed as a psychotic infant in 1994 when aged two. He was tested multiple times for deafness and labeled with early onset schizophrenia. During this difficult time his parents sought early intervention to assist him to speak and help him with his social skills. Some of the interventions that helped Andrew to develop during this time were: Applied Behavior Application (A.B.A), therapists, after-school programs and support from family members, and Hand Foundation NJ C.E.O, Dr. Sandrie S. Bermudez.
Andrew W. Merced was embraced, empowered and encouraged at the age of 3 to use his talents and gifts to make a difference in society. Dr. Sandrie S. Bermudez, a diversity leader, integrated him into many of her programs such as retreats, conferences and as a keynote speaker sharing on the topic of Autism. Dr. Sandrie S. Bermudez' recognition of diversity and her ability in promoting awareness in individuals with intellectual disabilities has helped to bring about valuable changes in society. Andrew W. Merced may have an imbalanced set of senses, however, with the support of his family and The HF SpEd programs/Exceptional People - Mental Health he has been able to write books, advocate and speak at conferences about Autism. |
